JOURNALISM CERTIFICATE

Arabic

Objectives:

This certificate aims to help journalists upgrade their skills and learn new techniques over an extended period, as well as to help professional media practitioners advance in their careers. A converged newsroom is meant to be the venue for the training of Arab journalists in print, broadcast and online media. The courses are hands-on, application-oriented modules with heavy reliance on case studies. Lab work, exercises and projects will take priority over theoretical pursuits.

Target Participants:
The certificate courses are aimed at participants ranging from beginners, to middle and senior level journalists in their respective hierarchies.
Others in media-related fields, or those just wishing to acquire journalistic skills, may also enroll, although journalists will be given priority.

Language of Instruction:
The certificate courses are conducted in Arabic and English.

Certificate Requirements:
The journalism certificate requires the successful completion of four core courses and one elective in two years.

Core Courses
- CJRN 101 Media & Society/Laws & Ethics
- CJRN 102 Basic Reporting, Writing and Editing
- CJRN 103 Multi-Media/Online Journalism
- CJRN 104 Broadcast Journalism

Elective Courses
- CJRN 105 Investigative Journalism
- CJRN 106 Newsroom Management

English Entrance Exam (EEE):
Those wishing to enroll must pass the English Entrance Exam (EEE) that will be administered on February 19, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. in Nicely Hall, Room 500 at AUB. The EEE Fee is L.L. 50,000 (fifty thousand) and payment can be made at the AUB Cashier's Office in College Hall, opposite the Main Gate on Bliss Street.

Registration for the exam will be in Nicely Hall two days before the exam, but students have to come first to the Continuing Education Center (CEC) Building to get the EEE and Journalism Certificate forms. The CEC building is opposite the AUB Medical Gate, off-campus.

Applicants should also bring with them two (2) photos and a copy of their identity card or passport.

Applicants for the Journalism Certificate need a minimum score of 400 in EEE (or any of the following - TOEFL: CBT 163 or IB 57) and the equivalent of a high school certificate/secondary school diploma to be admitted. Applicants who are graduates of a university where English is the language of instruction are exempted from the English language test. An applicant may also be required to report for an interview with the program coordinator.

An applicant with a EEE score of 350-399 (TOEFL: CBT 155 or IB 50) may be allowed to take a maximum of two courses provided he/she sits for the EEE/TOEFL at the end of the first and/or second course and meets the minimum requirements. If the student does not meet the minimum required English score for entry into that program by the end of the second course, he/she will be disqualified for the certificate and will not be allowed to register for another course in that certificate. The student will have to take more English courses before being allowed to re-register to complete the Journalism Certificate courses and become eligible for a certificate upon completion of the requirements.

Application for the Journalism Certificate:
Applications for the Journalism Certificate are available at the Continuing Education Center (CEC), or may be downloaded from http://rep.aub.edu.lb/cec. The application may be typed or legibly hand written and should be submitted at the CEC office accompanied by the following documents:
